THE IDEA

A route with room
for your story.

Family time

Family itineraries usually fail in one of two ways. Either they are built for adults with a kids' club bolted on, or they are so relentlessly child-focused that the parents come home needing a holiday. This one assumes everyone in the party is a person.

Practically, that means one base rather than three. Sanur, on the east coast, because the reef makes the water calm enough for younger swimmers and the beachfront path is flat enough to cycle. Nothing is more than ninety minutes away by car, and most days have a hard stop by mid-afternoon.

Rooms are booked as interconnecting or as a two-bedroom villa, never as a family of four in one room with a rollaway. Meals build in the fact that children eat earlier and adults occasionally want to eat without them, so two evenings include a sitter arranged through the property.

We have run this with children from four to fifteen. Tell your specialist the actual ages and they will move the pieces around — the turtle sanctuary lands very differently at six than at fourteen.

DAY BY DAY

The shape of
the journey.

Every day has intention, with enough breathing room to follow a recommendation or change your mind.

  1. 0101

    Land and swim

Airport pickup and a short transfer to Sanur — deliberately the closest good base to the airport, because nobody wants a three-hour drive after a night flight. The rest of the day is the pool.

  2. 0202

    Bikes and the reef

Cycles for everyone along the beachfront path in the morning, which is flat, traffic-free and about as low-stress as Bali gets. Snorkelling off the reef in the afternoon for anyone who wants it.

  3. 0303

    Elephants, properly

A half day at a genuine sanctuary rather than a riding operation — no riding, no performances, and the difference is explained to the children in a way that tends to stick. Back by lunch.

  4. 0404

    Waterfall and a swim

North to a waterfall with a swimmable pool at the base and a walk in that is manageable for shorter legs. Packed lunch. Home by four.

  5. 0505

    Make something

A family batik or silver workshop, which sounds like an activity for the brochure and is consistently the thing children talk about afterwards. Everyone takes home the thing they made, however it turned out.

  6. 0606

    Turtles, then nothing

The turtle conservation centre in the morning, then a deliberately empty afternoon so the packing happens without a row.

  7. 0707

    Home

Late checkout and a short transfer to the airport.
